The Power of Play in Pediatric Occupational Therapy

When parents first hear “therapy,” they sometimes imagine serious exercises or clinical settings. But in pediatric OT, play is the work of childhood – and it’s where real growth happens.

Through play, children practice problem-solving, coordination, emotional regulation, and confidence, all while having fun. For example:

  • Building with blocks strengthens fine-motor control and planning.

  • Swinging or climbing helps organize the sensory system.

  • Pretend play fosters social understanding and emotional expression.

A good OT session looks a lot like playtime, but every game, obstacle course, and activity is intentionally designed to help your child build the skills they need for daily life.

So when your child’s therapist says, “Let’s play,” know that real progress is happening underneath the laughter.
