Helping Your Child Build Independence at Home

One of the most common goals in pediatric OT is independence. That is, giving children the confidence and ability to do more on their own. You can support this growth at home with a few simple habits:
Give time, not help. When possible, resist the urge to jump in too quickly — a little extra time builds confidence.
Create small challenges. Pouring water, opening containers, or zipping coats are everyday “mini workouts” for fine motor skills.
Keep routines consistent. Predictability reduces stress and lets kids focus on skill-building.
Celebrate effort. Progress is rarely perfect – praise persistence more than outcomes.
Building independence isn’t about doing things for your child – it’s about doing things with them until they can do it on their own.
If you’d like guidance on how to support these milestones, a pediatric OT can help you create a plan that fits your child’s unique needs.
